Between 1978 and 1982 I studied Andragology at the University of Amsterdam and obtained a 'kandidaats', which is like a Bachelor degree, with minors in law, race and ethnic studies, film and theatre studies.
Between 1983 - 1986 I studied Social Sciences at the University of Amsterdam and specilized in Methods and Techniques of research.
Between 2005 and 2007 I was a PhD candidate at the University of Amsterdam.
In 2007 I defended my dissertation Presence and the Design of Trust.
Between 2010 and 2017 I was a researcher and associate professor at Delft University of Technology.
Between 2018 and 2025 I was professor Desiging Urban Experience at the University of Amsterdam. Here I supervised 5 PhD candidates.
Between 2009 - 2012 I conducted a larger research program into Witnessing, which was funded by Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. As a result we created the website www.being-here.net. A book was published Witnessing You and It led to a special issue for AI & Society, Journal for Knowledge, Culture and Communication.
Between 2016 - 2024 I conducted a larger research study into Rhythm. This was sponsered by 6 cities (Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, Zaandam, Zoetermeer, Helmond), The Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions, The Netherlands Science Foundation. All results of this study are here below in the collection on Rhythm
