Courses:
- Research design course for masters: Starting from Nov the 2nd, 13-17u, 20 hours of homework
- Introduction to academic writing:
- PhD course ethnographic methods: I see that this course is in the same time with the research design course.
- Additionally, I will follow the Open Set seminar schedule
Planning:
- September-January: This will be the thinking and learning time. For the data science team, it can be an opportunity to understand the data situation. In this period, the larger research team carries out several meetings on research design.
- January-May: Fast iterations, piloting.
Upcoming meetings research team:
- 28 September 13:00-17:00 = Only academics meet
- 12 October 13:00-17:00 = Larger research team (Zuidoost)
- 17 December 10:00-12:00 = Larger research team (Zuidoost)
- Pinar will check these meeting dates with TU Delft
Approach:
Resilience to rhythm:
- Understanding the meaning of the terminology such as resilience, cohesion, inclusiveness. If talking about design, to first understand the agenda of design to see where resilience can come in.
- What role rhythms play in creating notions in society (such as discipline).
- There are lots of research on discovering the city.
- Rhythm affects people’s interaction. Here rhythms can be seen as a cause, or effect of specific rhythms on humans can be discussed. Literature on environmental psychology and social psychology are interesting here.
- Rhythm as a resource: read Ostrom, Camilla Bovana (Bartlett), Cristopher Alexander (Experience of Place, Landscapes of Fear), Stanley Milgram (Going Wrong).
Rhythm and social resilience:
- How does resilience emerge in the theory of rhythms? Based on Michel Lamont’s book Social Resilience in Neo-Liberal Era (introduction via this link), resilience is seen as resourcefulness.
- Rhythm can be integrated in some of the definitions of resourcefulness. If so, can we establish that rhythm defines common space (considering that though resources commons emerge)?
- If we state that rhythm is a resource for diversity, what data collection will this include? What is the research question here?
Rhythm-design-social
- Seeing rhythm-design-social as a relationship for understanding necessary conditions, and not as how to do something.
- Cultural geography includes a lot of literature on buildings, space and social relationships. How the building design, dimensions of streets, etc. interact with the mood, feeling, emotions.
- Check Jane M. Jacobs (Building as an Event, Buildings Must Die) and Tom Gieryn (Place for Space).
Big data in social research:
- What are the major results in social science? What are the critical approaches to big data?
- Checking publications from Evelyn Ruppert (Goldsmiths, Big Data & Society) and AI Society (on human-centred technology)
To start:
- Understand the current notions of rhythm in urban study.
- Explore the usage of big data and social science without discussing the statistical approach.
- Start with a list of bibliography (using UvA e-book shelf), which will then lead to an annotated bibliography.
- Design how you will build bridges between the data scientists
