Every neighbourhood has its own rhythms: recurring activities, encounters, habits, and routines that shape daily life. These rhythms reveal much about how people engage with and experience their environment. By mapping them, we can gain a clearer understanding of what residents need and how neighbourhood initiatives and urban planning can better address those needs.
Tuindorp Oostzaan is a neighbourhood characterised by a strong social fabric that manifests through numerous rhythms. The study of social rhythms within the neighbourhood occurs in three sections:
- Mapping of Social Rhythms: In collaboration with local organisations and foundations, an overview is being created of all neighbourhood activities in Tuindorp Oostzaan and the surrounding areas.
- Participatory Rhythm Documentation: During group sessions lasting about an hour at various locations, neighbourhood rhythms are recorded alongside residents. Residents from nearby neighbourhoods, such as Molenwijk and Kadoelen, are also included.
- UvA Student Work: Students from the University of Amsterdam are conducting additional research on various themes related to rhythms and socially inclusive climate adaptation.
